What is vegan collagen?

Plant-based collagen or vegan collagen is collagen made by fermenting plant parts. This is the only type of collagen we use in our collagen products. In practical terms, this means that A vegan collagen supplement does not contain animal ingredients , making it a perfect alternative for vegetarians and vegans looking for a supplement that boosts the body's natural collagen levels.

Traditionally, collagen has primarily been extracted from animal hides, bones, or fish skin, but with increasing demand for vegan and plant-based products, interest has arisen in developing vegan alternatives to collagen.

Vegan collagen can be produced in several ways:

  1. Plant-based sources:

    • Some vegan collagen products use extracts or proteins from plant-based sources, such as algae, aloe vera, or other plants that contain nutrients aimed at supporting skin health.
  2. Synthetic production:

    • Technological advances have made it possible to synthesize collagen-like molecules without the use of animal products. These synthetic collagen molecules are designed to mimic the properties found in naturally occurring collagen.
  3. Amino acid supplements:

    • Some plant-based supplements are marketed as collagen boosters by providing the amino acids needed for collagen production in the body. These amino acids can come from plant-based sources or synthetic production.

However, it is important to understand that traditional collagen is primarily composed of specific amino acids, including glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which together make up a protein.
